American retail titan Walmart has urged the games industry to follow its Earth-conscious ways and go green. Holding a "green gaming summit," Walmart's buying team spoke with the likes of Microsoft, Sony, Electronic Arts and Activision to try and convince them to be more aware of power consumption and packaging with regards to healing the world, brotha.

Walmart wants game makers to develop easier ways to save one's game and power down machines so that consoles are not constantly hogging all the juice while players go away to eat a meal or perform other non-gaming activities. The retailer also seems keen to work with the industry to on coding and power usage design to try and reduce energy consumption during media playback.

The company's Joe Muha has suggested that Walmart's desires for a greener industry start with the next generation of consoles. "Focusing on the next generation of consoles would allow the machines to be built from the ground up to use less power while providing an even better experience," he explained.

Maybe an an old cynic, but I always find it weird when corporate entities start donning hippie wigs and reciting speeches from Fern Gully. Maybe they're genuine, but it screams of PR bulls*t. Still, sincere intentions or not, having more environmentally friendly consoles certainly couldn't hurt, eh?
