Special editions aren’t really as cool as they were back in the day (two, three years ago) because now every MMO released has them, special edition have turned into just another way of moving more subscriptions out of the people. They all end up coming with the usual suspects of goodies, a soundtrack, an art book, some poster, and an item that you better pray that it can be sold because, god, that thing will become useless faster than you can say [insert funny comment here] so it only ends up wasting space. The last time that a special edition item/ability that ended up being actually useful for some time was the fast travel ability from City of Heroes. Having the ability to travel around the world quickly from the start is awesome, there’s nothing else to say, but on top of that the graphics effect of the ability was different based on the store you got your game from. So the gamestop edition had a glowing trail behind you while the EB games version ( back when they weren’t owned by Gamestop) had some particle star effect or something like that. The Folks at Nc Soft really went to some lengths to make the special edition ability SPECIAL.

Age of Conan follows suit with the usual special edition stuff but they do have one time that will probably last for some time IF they don’t decided to add something similar later on. That special item is The Drinking Cape, the cape gives you the ability to get free drinks from all taverns across Hyboria! Why is this special you ask? Well, there will apparently be a drunken brawling PvP mini game included and having the ability to participate in this without taking a hit in your wallet as you try to save cash for you war elephant mount is something that’s very welcome.
