Who says only game developers get first dibs on understanding the inner workings of today's consoles? Mark Danks of Sony America has unveiled the PlayStation-edu program, which will grant universities and colleges access to the development kits of the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable (PSP). The schools that sign up for PlayStation-edu will first have to sign legal agreements, and will also need to purchase the hardware that comes with the program. It's well worth the costs, though - the schools will receive development software, hardware, and an SDK that will allow their students to do in-depth studies of how the PlayStation systems work.
Now, if you were wondering, no - the program won't allow you to literally create your own games. It's strictly an educational tool to help familiarize computer science and engineering students with the functions of Sony's machines.
PlayStation-edu is currently being made available to universities and colleges only - there doesn't any solid plans for a release to high schools. Those interested in reading further regarding this new program will want to access Danks' PlayStation Blog post, via the source link below.
