Sony are upgrading www.playstation.com so that it integrates more PSN features. They are also getting rid of the Playstation Underground service and integrating it into the PSN to create a more streamlined experience. The update will also allow us to check out our friend’s lists on the site. Other features are rating and reviewing games but I’m not sure if you can build a collection to show what you own. These all seem like good additions to me and I really like the design in the screenshot above. I look forward to when it launches next week.

Early next week, we’ll be integrating additional community features into PlayStation.com. We are excited to roll-out the first phase, which includes the ability to sign-in to PlayStation.com and, soon after, PlayStation.Blog with your PlayStation Network ID. Of course, your PlayStation Network ID gets you access to all the good things on the PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP, including games, movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Store, online gaming, and, soon to come for PS3, PlayStation Home.

In addition, we are making enhancements to the gamer profile features. Your profile will include your PSN online ID, your avatar, and a short “about me” section. You’ll also be able to display your friends list and, on the game detail pages, you’ll be able to include ratings and reviews for all of your favorite games. These features were created so that you can make new friends, learn new tricks and tips, talk trash, offer advice, console the defeated, praise the winners, and more.

If you have an Underground account on PlayStation.com and haven’t already merged it with your PlayStation Network ID, click here to do so. If you don’t have an Underground account but would like to create a PlayStation Network account to participate in the new features on PlayStation.com, click here.

We decided to dissolve the PlayStation Underground program in order to provide more PlayStation fans with a glimpse into the PlayStation Network world via the web. We hope you enjoy this next step in the evolution of PlayStation.com.

Stay tuned; before this year is over we’ll have more enhancements for your gamer profile.

And I thought finding Tabula Rasa for a buck was strange.

Valve has announced that the original Half-Life is officially 10 years old today. In honor of the game that essentially drove them to their status as one of the most dependable developers around, they’ve decided to drop its price down to 98¢. Of course, this offer is only available on their video game download service, Steam, and it will only last until Friday. But now anyone can check out the game that continues to top numerous “Best of” lists even to this day. Unless you’re really hungry for a Double Cheeseburger, that is.

From Electronic Arts? No way.

In an otherwise pretty sad story about the closure of EA's shadowy, innovative Blueprint division, Variety mentioned that one of the titles being developed in the style of Blueprint (development distributed around the world, coordinated online) is a sequel to their wonderful puzzle-action game, Boom Blox. It's been mentioned before, but this is the first direct acknowledgement of work being done on a followup.

Even though the Blueprint project is no more, the idea of collaboration between remote studios continues to be embodied in the ongoing work being done on the sequel. ""Everybody is integrated, regardless of whether they're in the same physical location," a former Blueprint staffer told Variety. "It's truly the spirit of what Blueprint was going to be."

The EA corporate philosophy stuff is neat, but to focus on what's important: yes, more Blox will be Boomed in the indeterminate future.

Gallery: BOOM BLOX
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/boom-blox/752261/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/boom-blox/752260/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/boom-blox/752259/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/boom-blox/752258/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/boom-blox/752257/">

[Via Nintendo Everything]
Variety spills Boom Blox 2 development originally appeared on Nintendo Wii Fanboy on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST.
It’s been more than six years since The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was released, yet the game continues to have a strong following — largely because of the dedicated modding community for the game. To help preserve the many mods that have been made for the game, BGS forum member Fliggerty has opened a new site, Morrowind Modding history, to help preserve current mods, as well as ones that have gotten lost over the years.

Check out the page here, and if you’ve got a long lost Morrowind mod, feel free to contribute it to the site.

Mark Betteridge, Rare studio manager, believes that videogames are a “niche experience” and will remain so until the industry’s culture of sequels changes. “The trouble with the business now is that we’ve got this sort of hamster-wheel mentality. If you look at the chart you’ll see a lot of sequels in there, and people re-spinning those ideas for new sequels as fast as possible for next year.”

Speaking in an interview with gi, Betteridge continues, “We’ll never really attract any new audiences from doing that, and that’s my problem with it. The box comes down cheaper, we’ll get a few more people who were waiting on the sidelines, but the lady that showed us to our table today - I bet she’s not got a 360, and has no intention of buying one… So to me, games are still somewhat of a niche experience compared with music, television and most art forms.”

There is truth in Mr Betteridge’s words, but the jaded old cynic in me reads ‘broader audiences’ and sees my Gran tottering around on a balance board, or my little cousin playing Ponyz. I’m all for new experiences and IPs, but if this is what he means then nail me to the Call Of Duty 9 hamster wheel, I’ll continue to enjoy our little niche thanks.

Lord of the Rings Online is getting closer and closer to the amazing atmosphere of the Lord of the Rings movies, the first expansion proving exactly this. Mines of Moria, because this is the name of the expansion pack I just mentioned, is now available across the U.S. and Europe, allowing you “to explore the ancient underground cities of the dwarves, battle epic characters in the depths, face off with the Watcher, be a part of the fateful release of Durin’s Bane and more! In addition to extending the challenge to new heights, Mines of Moria will introduce two new classes, ten additional levels, hundreds of new quests, and the highly anticipated Legendary Item system.”

If you forgot about Lord of the Rings Online, here’s what the press release says: “The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) has established itself as one of the world’s premium MMOs for successfully integrating story into a game that features innovative and entertaining advancement through an immersive and breathtaking world. Mines of Moria will raise the bar with the introduction of Legendary Items, a massive new system that will let players advance unique and powerful weapons and items that grow in might alongside their hero. These unique and powerful weapons will be by our players’ sides to aid in the challenging adventures that await them as we continue to journey through Middle-earth through the next several volumes of the game in years to come.”

To be honest, I don’t know anyone playing this game, although I happen to encounter new WoW players (too!) often, and each time I hear about Lord of the Rings, I remember the single player RTS with the same name, a game that left me with a very bitter taste in my mouth.

Anyway, let’s see the feature highlights of the Mines of Moria expansion now, shall we?

Ø Forge Legendary Items! – The Mines of Moria introduces Turbine’s revolutionary new item advancement system to LOTRO. Players can now forge unique weapons and class-related equipment and evolve them to build a legacy the likes of Bilbo’s Sting and Gandalf’s Glamdring™. These legendary weapons grow in power along with the player through their adventures and are customized by advancing the item’s virtues, adding runic legacies and modifying its title.

Ø Speak Friend, and Enter – Moria, called Khazad-dûm by the dwarves, was their capital and the grandest of cities. This enormous underground world in north-western Middle-earth comprises an immense network of tunnels, chambers, mines and huge halls beneath the Misty Mountains and represent one of the largest and most dangerous online underground environments ever created. Starting today players can journey through hundreds of new adventures and battle goblin hordes and the Nameless of the Deep in the ancient city underground which has served as the foundation for the modern-day dungeon-crawling adventures.

Ø The Epic Story Continues! — The Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria begins Volume II of The Lord of the Rings Online storyline. Players will experience six new books rich with new characters and content and face the fiery wrath of Durin’s Bane, battle the Watcher, bring aid to the Lady Galadriel and more.

Ø Increased Level Cap — Players can now advance their characters up to level 60, opening access to a wealth of new traits, virtues, skills and class quests. The crafting system also now offers a new Tier and gives players the ability to join crafting guilds to create even more powerful items.

Ø Discover Two New Classes — The Rune-keeper and the Warden, the first new classes to be introduced since the launch of the game, offer players the opportunity to create all-new characters and experience LOTRO in exciting new ways.

I guess that if you’re a fan of the movies, the online game is also “a must,” and this reminds me that, one fine day, I won’t be able to keep avoiding this and enter the Mines of Moria to live the adventure myself, once again.

The upcoming first person shooter F.E.A.R. 2 : Project Origin continues the supernatural suspense story of the original F.E.A.R. retaining the original storyline and characters. It’s worth noting that expansion titles Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate events will not be acknowledged, since they’re not considered part of the “official canon” having not been produced by Monolith Productions. The game is scheduled for February 2009 in the US and Europe for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Here is a glimpse of the game in the latest trailer:
Click here to view the embedded video.
John Mulkey, the lead designer for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, describes the game as being “a more open environment” noting that “a destroyed city opens up an incredible amount of opportunities.” Also, Mulkey mentions that the enemies will be much more varied than in the previous game.

Watch the developers discuss details of the design of the game:
