Just downloaded the shiny New Xbox Experience? Bored of spinning your avatar’s head around ’till his eyes go squiffy? Wish you could get your hands on some more outfits for the little fella? Well, you’re in luck, Microsoft has the just the thing for you.

Xbox LIVE product unit manager Jerry Johnson, while speaking to VG247, has confirmed that new Avatar clothing options will be arriving on the NXE over the next 6 months. They will arrive in the form of themed packs. There aren’t any more official details just yet, but if you cast your mind back to the pre-E3 information leak, there was an image doing the rounds of avatars dressed as Samurai and Rabbits, as well as a few outfits I don’t remember seeing in the current options. Expect that stuff to turn up eventually. There’s also no official word on whether we will have to pay for these packs, but you can bet your life we will.

Me? I quite fond of my white suit thanks, that will do me fine…. unless they do a Ninja suit of course… or Zombies, that would be great… a Street Fighter clothing pack would be pretty awesome!.. OR A DARTH VADER HELMET!!! Woooo! Oh man, this could be bad. How will I explain to my wife that we missed a mortgage payment, all because I wanted to dress my avatar up like Chun Li? Y’know… just because I was curious.

Two days until the release of the new “World of Warcraft” expansion:

When you create a character in a game, how do you choose a name?

Do you go with the name randomization button? Do you just make one up right when you create the character?

Or do you think about it days before the game comes out?

If you’re the latter, you’re not alone. While I was looking around on the official “World of Warcraft” forums, I noticed more than a few threads started by players trying to decide what to name their Death Knight.

The new Hero class is available to players who have existing level 55 characters; they’re able to create a level 55 Death Knight from scratch. But if you’re like most hardcore “WoW” players, you’ve got multiple characters already, and you may have exhausted ideas for monikers.

If you’re stumped for names (I usually am, as someone with characters hastily dubbed “Tj,” “Teejay,” and “Droolia”), here are some good and bad suggestions, as chosen by the forum’s users…

“BAD” NAMES:
Arthas (or any variation — ArthasX, Xarthasx, Arthasss, Arrthas, Arrtthas)
Bubbles
Anything from fantasy fiction or religion (Death, Lord, Bane, Caine, Kane, Lucifer, Blood, Rune, Shade, Shadow, Night, Walker, Grim)

***

So what are you going to name your Death Knight? Will your monikers be inspired by pop culture icons, metal bands, other languages, anything Tolkien or your own name?

Halloween was always my favorite holiday. It sits just a few days after my own birthday so I often added sweet costumes to my birthday gift wishlist. Darth Vader plastic mask, full body gorilla costume, and Luke Duke plastic smock with the words "Luke Duke" and a sketch of Tom Wopat on it were all on my list at one point or another. This month I had an intense bit of Halloween fantasy wish fulfilment when I visited the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles to produce our new web series, "Monster Makeover". The show is intended to show off how much movies and games have crossed over, by having Hollywood makeup artists compete to create makeup effects based on Xbox 360 games. Episode 1 is embedded here. If you LOVE higher res, check the blip version.

I met people at this school who made the monsters and makeup effects for films and TV shows like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Stargate SG1 and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Though I didn't get to take any souvenirs home one of my coworkers - who you all know very well - got turned into a mega-evil Fable II character (You'll have to watch the series to see.)

I had a blast making the series and I'm hoping you find some silly joy in the 8 episodes we put together. Even if you think I make a terrible Ryan Seacrest (I do), there was some amazing work done on the show AND you can enter to win some prize stuff.

Here's the press release copy and paste (keeping true to my early blogging days...)

--
Launched on October
23rd, Monster Makeover is the show where Hollywood models get turned
into monsters and tough guys based on video games. Shot on location at
the Cinema Make-up School in Los Angeles, Monster Makeover takes you
behind the scenes with the makeup artists who create the creatures you
love. Each episode gives contestants a limited time to transform a
lovely model into a gruesome ghoul. We’ll judge which make-up artists
create the best effects and then send the losers packing. The last
competitor standing will win a job on a film or TV project with
Spectral Motion, the studio behind Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Our
list of expert judges includes industry legends like Leonard Engelman,
makeup artist on How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Lee Joyner, makeup
artist on Stargate SG-1 and Mimic, Michael Key, editor of Makeup Artist
Magazine and Mike Elizalde, owner of the studio behind Hellboy II: The
Golden Army and XMen: The Last Stand.

Viewers of Monster
Makeover will be able to register for a chance to win a prize package
consisting of an Xbox 360 Elite console, a 4GB Zune, and Five Xbox 360
video games. Viewers will be able to enter multiple times during the
promotion, once after every episode, airing on Mondays and Thursdays
from now through November 20th.

Some of the best horror and sci
fi experiences of the year will be in video game form on the Xbox 360.
Monster Makeover will feature effects from fall blockbusters like Gears
of War 2, Fable II, Dead Space, Fallout 3, and Left 4 Dead. Check out
new episodes at www.xbox.com/monstermakeover.

The game uses the Euphoria Engine along with the standard Havok Physics. The game sets you in the shoes of Darth Vader's secret apprentice and has you traipsing across the galaxy in standard 3rd player action fare, despite all the hype of unleashed force powers, the euphoria engine and other techie buzz words.

Gameplay: 7/10

Pros: The story is definitely interesting especially for star wars fans. The game starts out with a bang and the force powers are increbily entertaining to use and toy around with in the first 2-3 stages...

Cons: The game gets less fun and more frustrating as you move along. Enemies become cheap, and immune to your nifty force powers or are just too overwhelming to use the entertaining force grip. Leveling up doesn't really unlock anything new...combat gets repetitive.

Graphics: 7/10

Pros: The graphics are definitely AAA and the levels are all gorgeous. Using real actors to motion-cap adds authenticity.

Cons: The enemy animations are fantastic but oftentimes at a distance and wasted. Act 2 has you retread all the same planets from Act 1, as a result enemies are reused and it all just gets repetitive.

Sound/Music: 9/10

Pros: The Star Wars scoring and sound fx as always are excellent. The voicework is definitely above par for a video game and just as good as one of the canonical star wars movies.

Cons: I'm pretty sure they got some impressionists for Princess Leia and Vader...just not the same.

Lasting Appeal: 5/10

Pros: The Story is definitely worth seeing through to the end.

Cons: No real replay value, no multiplayer or noteworthy modes other than the single player campaign.

Average: 72.50%

Tilt: -0.50%

This is an absolutely perfect game to rent, beat and throw away. The gameplay is very fun in the first few hours and after that the story is worth suffering through the repetition and cheapness in the final levels. I guess if you are a huge star wars fan this warrants a purchase, but otherwise this game just has no legs other than its story. It would have benefited from a lot more RPG character leveling and more force abilities.

Verdict: 72%

One of the worries involved with downloadable content is that developers simply hide the content on the disc and charge you for an unlock code.

Namco Bandai has been a prime offender. All of the “Beautiful Katamari” downloadable content on Xbox Live, for example, is 364 KB each. When you buy it, it just “unlocks” on the disc.

I wondered if the publisher would take the same approach with the Darth Vader and Yoda downloadable characters for “Soul Calibur IV.” They never outlined a good reason why the characters were restricted to a single platform — Yoda on Xbox 360, Darth Vader on PlayStation 3 — it seemed marketing-driven.

The characters were added to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network this morning. I checked, and it looks like the download size for Darth Vader is almost 8 MB on XBL. That suggests it wasn’t on the disc. I can’t check the file size for Yoda on PSN, but one would assume it’s in the same ballpark.

That doesn’t explain why the characters needed to be split up in the first place, but at least you’re not paying $4.99 for little more than a glorified cheat code.

The wise, little green guy goes to the Xbox 360, while the notoriously loud exhaler villain treks to the PS3.

While that's good news, there's an even better one. The downloadable contents aren't just hidden on the game discs. We all know how sneaky some devs have been, hiding content on discs and posing it as DLC just to get a few bucks from you in exchange for an unlock code. We've seen it happen to Katamari and I doubt any of you were particularly happy to be charged for a 364 KB content that's already inside the game you bought.

Well that's not gonna happen here in SCIV. MTV Multiplayer did a bit of snooping around and found that Yoda's DLC on the Xbox 360 is almost 8 MB in size. Definitely, they did not just hide it in the disc. PSN doesn't show how big the file is for Darth Vader but it would be pretty safe to assume it's somewhere near the same range.

Considering the size, we're guessing that's a whole lot of playtime with Yoda and Darth Vader.

Related Soul Calibur IV articles:

Yoda and Vader crossover DLC for SoulCalibur IV announced

Rumor: Yoda and Vader to become Soul Calibur 4 DLC?

Surprising no one, Namco Bandai has brought the previously console-exclusive
Star Warscharacters Yoda and Darth Vader to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, respectively.

The two characters are now available for download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace for $5.

Some would argue that this timed-exclusivity was a cheap ploy by Namco Bandai to suck even more cash from
Soulcalibur IVfans, and honestly I have to agree.

Most will see this latest round of downloadable content as a necessary purchase to ensure they have the game in its entirety, and even though my capitalist side applauds the strategy here, the gamer side of me hates having to shell out even more cash for content that should have been in the game on release.
