It may not be an exclusive for Sony, but it does look like the PlayStation 3 will be getting the definitive Alone in the Dark experience with Inferno. Alone in the Dark: Inferno will stay true to the previous version’s storyline putting players in the shoes of Edward Carnby as he tries to survive one hellish night and uncover the mystery of New York’s Central Park. However, development studio Eden Games has paid heed to the reviews and opinions of gamers and implemented several changes and improvements to the game including an all-new action sequence.

Atari promises to really turn up the heat with a whole chunk of improvements listed after the jump.

• Full 360 degree camera control: enhanced camera controls allows complete freedom of the camera and better handling of third person movement for even more immersive gameplay enabling players to view the fire and mass destruction they are causing in all of its glory.
• Fine-tuned controls: quicker and smoother reactivity of the hero’s movements in third person view increases the pace of the game and makes for faster, reflexive gameplay during tense fighting scenarios;
• Inventory system more accessible: more logical jacket inventory system with the ability to scroll rapidly through the inventory with the D-pad or analog stick to combine objects. In addition, gameplay is paused when accessing the inventory system to allow maximum creativity in combining items to create unique flammable weapons;
• More tips: additional on-screen tips will help players quickly adapt to controls and easily understand how to overcome tricky situations;
• Spectral Vision tuning: a tutorial earlier in the storyline explains the need to burn roots in order to gain spectral vision (a power that grants you the ability to see the unseen) and difficulty tuning means less spectral vision is required to reach the end of the game;
• Improved car dynamics and handling: driving has been tuned with increased suspension and reduced drifting giving overall better handling to make driving a fun walk in the park every time;
• 59th Street level tuning: one of the game’s most exciting sequences just got better. 59th Street has been tweaked for a more satisfying race against the fissure with difficulty tuning, an added checkpoint at Columbus Circle and clear voice directions given by Sarah;
• Brand new thrilling action sequence: an exclusive new sequence has been added in Episode 6 for even more excitement and variety of gameplay in the episode.

Gamers can get feel the heat for themselves via a new demo heading to the PSN early this November.

While Far Cry 2 is very definitely just a shooter, Edwards’ review suggests that Stalker’s “wide corridor” model (that I loved so much) is going to be made to look shabby by this seamless 50km world, as executed by a talented, well-funded studio. I can’t wait to get to grips with the kind of freedom in an FPS that has previously only really manifested itself in GTA games. This latest trailer doesn’t make the longing any better, showing off loads of the open world stuff, including character dialogue, gun-play, speeding vehicles, and the ubiquitous fiery explosions. The dynamic story-telling perhaps doesn’t lend itself well to trailers, but trying reading our previous interview with the lead designer to get your head around that a bit better.

Usually I can’t hope to receive a boxed copy of a new game more than a week prior to it hitting store shelves. But so far I’ve received “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed,” “Fracture,” “Dead Space,” and, today, October 21’s “Little Big Planet” all in their store-ready shrink-wrapped boxes well before their release dates.

I have a few tidbits to share based on the box and the manual, but, first, do I think this fall trend is good because I can brag about having the game before you?

No, I think it’s good because… it suggests that these games aren’t being developed down to the wire. Instead it seems they are getting completed under a more sensible schedule that allows them to get passed to the press in a finished form that provides ample time for informed reviews and impressions.

Reviews of “LBP” based on the boxed copies I and other reporters are receiving today are prohibited until October 14, but I can surely give you some impressions of…. well… the box. And the manual. (I’m in Manhattan but my PS3 is in Brooklyn, a subway ride away.)

What can I tell you from the box? That the game plays in 720P, supports 1-4 players online and requires 600MB of harddrive space. That’s not terribly exciting.

Anything cool in the manual? No mention of the Solid Snake and “Final Fantasy VII” add-on content nor of there being a paid marketplace. But there is a nice note from the manual-writer about how to behave in this game when playing online:

We want to create a big, happy family — and that means the we all need to respect each other’s feelings. So, as tempting as it is, please refrain from being rude! No swearing, no rude drawings and nothing that would offend your granny.

One other thing. The letter that came with my copy of “LBP” notes that the game’s servers won’t go live until October 21, the game’s official release date. So if you manage to get your own early copy, don’t expect to be able to see and share other players’ levels yet. Make your own. Or play the ones on the disc.

And, of course, make sure that the reviews you read on 10/14 either acknowledge that the game wasn’t test online or show some sign that the reviewer used the online features that were available in the game’s beta.

Announced earlier in a press release, the December issue of OXM will feature the first review of Fallout 3. The magazine should be hitting subscribers any day (maybe even as we speak), and will hit newsstands a week before the game hits shelves — October 21st.
